Introduce topic by describing, activity name, content standard, and objectives. Start the session by asking the participants the following questions: -When did you begin drinking? -Did you have any family members who were drinking when you were young? -Did they look like they were having fun? -Do any of you have any children? How old are they? -When do you want or you would allow your children to begin drinking? Inform the participants that they will watch a video that describes how we are influenced by other family members, the media, and the alcohol companies to begin drinking. Play the video. "How early do you want your children to begin abusing substances?" After watching the video, ask the following questions: -What do you think about the speaker's presentation? Do you agree with his statement about "auto-suggestion?" -What is your favorite alcohol-related jingle/commercial? Why? -Do you think that they are effective? Why or why not? What does the speaker mean by saying that alcohol is, "...the greatest solvent in the world?" How does it clean our brains? Do you agree with that statement? Why, why not? As a final activity, ask the participants if there is a way to change how young people begin drinking. Is it possible or should we just accept it as a fact of life? What can we say to our children when they begin experiencing with alcohol? What would we say? |
