Introduce topic by describing, activity name, content standard, and objectives. Start the discussion by asking the following guiding questions: -Have you ever reached a goal that seemed very difficult to accomplish but you managed to reach it? What was it? -Did you reach that goal by yourself or you had a support system? -What obstacles did you confront in trying to reach that goal? -Did you think about quitting anytime during the process? -Did you think about reasons or excuses to quit at any time during the process? -Did you think about any of those obstacles before you began the process of pursuing your dream? Discuss with participants that many times we embark upon reaching worth while goals but that many times we do not consider the obstacles ahead. Some obstacles are unknown and unpredictable but many obstacles can be identified and therefore, avoided or conquered. Tell the participants that we will read an article about two kinds of obstacles and how to identify them. Give each participant a copy of the article. Organize reading groups if the class is large. Encourage participants to discuss information among their smaller groups. Also, ask the participants to identify a member of the group to share their discussion with the larger group. In order to guide the discussion, ask the following questions: -What are obstacles? -What is the difference between obstacles and limitations? -What categories of obstacles are there? -What are the personal and the external obstacles? -How can you overcome the obstacles? As a final activity, ask the participants to think of a goal they would like to accomplish. Ask them to identify at least 3 obstacles they foresee in trying to accomplish their goal. Have the participants to write at least one action they can think of for each obstacle they have identified. Ask for a volunteer to share his or her plan of action in reaching his or her goal. |
