Introduce topic by describing, activity name, content standard, and objectives. Start session by asking the following questions: -Do you believe in setting goals? -What is the first important goal that you have set and actually accomplished? -What are some of the reasons why people do not reach their goals? Inform the participants that we will practice with a tool to visualize goal setting. Introduce the video, "Goal Setting - Why is it important?" Before you show the video, tell the participants that after the video is over you will give them a copy of a sheet that will help us discuss the different areas that need goal setting. After the video is finished, distribute the "Wheel of Life" sheet. Ask the participants the following questions: -How many areas are included in the "Wheel of Life" sheet? Are there any missing? -Ask the participants if there is an area or subject that needs clarification. Explain the rating system of 1-10. The important aspect is not to give grades in goal setting but it is a visual tool to identify areas of focus and if there is a need to write more reachable goals. -After you clarify each area and the rating system, give examples of at least two areas. For example, what would be an achievable goal in health? Give students about 10-20 minutes to write at least one goal in each area. After the participants finish ask them to share one goal and the target area with the group. Discuss with class if it is reachable. As a final activity, ask the participants to focus only in one goal. Instruct them that in order to achieve a goal, they need to write a least of specific actions to accomplish that particular goal; in other words, a TODO list. Make sure they include a due date to the list. The following is an example: Area: Health Term: Short term Due date: one month from now(look at the calendar and write the date for one month after today's date) To DO List 1. I will eat red meat only once a week 2. I will exercise twice a week for 30 minutes each time 3. I will drink only on weekends 4. I will stop drinking sodas everyday You can modify the TO DO list to your liking. Ask for a volunteer to share their goal. |
