Video: Can I drink Alcohol while pregnant?

Article: Alcohol in pregnancy

Write the objectives and the guiding questions on the board.

Procedures
Introduce topic by describing, activity name, content standard, and objectives.

Start the session by asking the following questions:

Do you think that it is harmful for an unborn baby the consumption of alcohol my the mother during pregnancy?

If it is, what are the known consequences?

Do you know of anyone who drinks, smokes or uses drugs during pregnancy? Does anyone expresses the danger about dangers?

Tell the participants that you will play a video that answers the question, "Can I drink Alcohol while pregnant?"

Make sure to tell the participants to pay special attention to the consequences of alcohol abuse.

After watching the video, ask the participants the following questions

What is the most important period to avoid drinking alcohol by a pregnant woman and why?

Write comments and make sure to include most important points if participants do not mention them.

How would alcohol get to the baby if the mother drinks it?

Ask the male participants if it is important for them as males, to know this information and why.

Tell them that now they will read an article that describes some of the same concepts as the video.

Organize five teams and give each participant a copy of the article.

Assign each team a section of the article as follows:

-Team 1: What's the official advice?

-Team 2: How is drinking in pregnancy potentially harmful?

-Team 3: The healthiest option

-Team 4: Alcohol units

-Team 5: Getting help cutting down

Give them 15 to 20 minutes to read and discuss the assigned section.

Make sure to let them know that as they discuss the content, they need to identify an individual from the group to report and share what they discuss to the larger group.

Ask each team reporter to comment the important points of the section assigned.

Finally, share with them that according to Dr. Francisco Pascual, member of the European Scientific Society Socidrogalcohol, and medical adviser to the Federation of Rehabilitated Alcoholics of Spain (FARE), "...there is no safety threshold that alcohol is allowed; therefore a zero dose is advocated." The doctor adds that you need to "...discard the belief that nothing happens for a drink once in a while, because this causes the amount of alcohol to increase, and the risk of damage to the baby is underestimated because "...it is just a little bit of alcohol."

As a final activity ask the participants to assist you in identifying three solid reasons to convince a woman not to drink while pregnant.
