Introduce topic by describing activity name, content standard, and objectives. Start the session by asking the following questions: -Who was the first person or individual that you remember told you many times the word "No?" Why did he/she tell you no? Do you think it was unfair? Why, why not? -Have you ever said no to a request made by a family member, friend, or co-worker? Can you expand on why you said no? If nobody volunteers a sample, share with them an occasion when you had to say no but you knew it was necessary. The important point here is that we need to learn to say no when it is a decision with consequences. Tell the participants that you will play a video called "The Art of Saying No: Kenny Nguyen." Add that this video illustrates the importance of how, when, and why to say NO. Also, make sure that they know that Kenny Nguyen is a very young person who is the CEO of a very successful company. After watching the video ask the following questions: -What is the most important message you gather from the presentation? -Do you have an experience that you now regret because you did not say NO? Encourage them to share. -What are the most difficult situations when it is very difficult to say NO? Make sure that there are at least a couple of situations to discuss so there is an opportunity to identify situations when they have to choose to drink or drink more. -Are you a YES or NO person? Why do you say that? As a culminating activity, ask the participants to help you identify some of the consequences of not being able to say NO. If the following consequences are not mentioned, add them and have a brief discussion about the different examples. - Making choices to please others. - Doing things that you do not want to do. - Divert you from your goals or life path - Being not coherent and consistent |
