Write the objectives and guiding questions on the board

 
Procedures
Introduce topic by describing activity name, content standard, and objectives.

Initiate discussion by asking the following questions:

Do you know what binge drinking is?

Do you know of anyone who can drink more than 5 alcoholic beverages in less than an hour?

Do you know your own drinking pattern when you drink?On average, about how many drinks do you drink every time you drink socially?

Do you plan what will be your drinking limit before you start drinking?

As participants share their ideas about the guiding questions, make sure you write the most relevant ideas on board for further discussion.

Explain ho according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, binge drinking is the use of alcohol that increases the concentration of blood alcohol to 0.08%, that is, 4 or more drinks for women and 5 or more drinks for men.

Tell the participants that they will watch a video entitled "Binge Drinking" which talks about some of the consequences of drinking alcohol. Ask the participants to pay attention to the myths about binge drinking because the myths will be discussed after the video is watched.

Make sure you focus on at least five myths about binge drinking and have a discussion about each myth. Ask the participants if they agree with statements and to provide reasons as to why they believe the way they do. Here's a list of the myths in the order they are presented:

Myth One

Binge drinking is harmless

Myth Two

College students are the biggest binge drinkers

Myth Three

Binge drinkers are alcoholics

Myth Four

Binge drinking is an individual's problem

Myth Five

Binge drinking is more prevalent on individuals with low social economic status

After you finish the conversation, discuss some of the solutions and strategies the video provides in order to prevent binge drinking. Make sure that participants have a chance to analyze if strategies could have a positive effect on diminishing binge drinking. Here's a list of the suggested recommendations:

-Taxation

-Reducing liquor stores

-Reducing times and places of consumption

As a final activity, ask participants to assist you create a list of specific ideas that can help an individual avoid binge drinking. For example, if they know they are going to assist an event in which they know there will be excessive alcohol consumption, what could they do to be aware of avoiding excessive alcohol consumption themselves?
