Introduce topic by describing activity name, content standard, and objectives. Start the session by asking the participants if they think the following statements are true: -Alcohol increases sexual potency Make sure that participants give you reasons as to why they believe that statement is true. Present the following statements and follow same procedures for each statement. -Alcohol helps you sleep better -Drinking aspirins before you go to bed after a night of drinking heavily helps you avoid hangovers next morning. Ask the participants if they know of any other statements related to alcohol consumption that they believe are true but that most people do not agree with those believes or assumptions. Discuss as a group all the arguments of the participants and add that there are many misconceptions about alcohol that need to be clarified. The important aspect of dispelling myths is that many times, when we do not know better, those images incite consumption and abuse in many individuals. Inform the participants that we will watch a video titled, "29 Misconceptions about alcohol." After the video is over, ask participants to name at least 5 misconceptions that affect most people. Make sure you prepare a list of misconceptions that must be discussed but were not mentioned by the participants. As the participants present each misconception, write in on the board and have a discussion about it. Make sure to discuss it in depth so participants have a time to analyze each misconception. As a final activity, invite participants to discuss alternative actions to the misconceptions discussed. For example, if there was a discussion about taking aspirins before going to bed to avoid a hangover next day, what would be some ideas as alternatives? |
