Introduce topic by describing the activity name, content standards, and the objectives. Start the session by asking the following questions: -Do you know what binge drinking is? Ask for volunteers to share what they know about binge drinking. -Has anyone you know been in trouble for participating in binge drinking? What happened? -Why do you think people do it? Inform participants that according to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, Los Angeles, California, "...binge drinking refers to consuming large quantities of alcohol in a short period of time, usually defined as consuming five or more drinks for a man, or four or more drinks for a woman in a very limited amount of time." Inform the participants that you are going to play a video that shows the differences between drinking and binge drinking. After watching the video, ask the following questions: -How do you think the person from the first scene sees himself/herself? -How does he/she really look like? -What is the reaction of the people around him/her? -Do you think that if everyone was involved in that behavior, they would react the same way? Why, why not? After the first discussion, inform the participants that they will read an article called "Binge Drinking" Organize five teams and give each participant a copy of the full article. Assign each team to read a section as follows: - Team 1: What Is Binge Drinking? and Why Do people Binge Drink? - Team 2: Risk of Binge Drinking and Alcohol Poisoning - Team 3: Impaired Judgment - Team 4: Physical Health and Mental Health - Team 5: Alcoholism and Getting Help Give each team enough time to read and discuss what they read. Inform the participants that each team needs to identify one team member to report back to the whole class on what they discuss within their group. After you can observe that teams had enough time to read and discuss content, ask each team leader/reporter to provide a brief summary of their conversation. Make sure that there is a reasonable answer to each topic in the article. As a final activity, ask participants to help you answer the 5 W's for the "Binge Drinking" topic: -What is binge drinking? -Who participates in binge drinking? -Why is it a common occurrence? -Where does it take place for the most part? -When does it occur? |
