Start the conversation by asking following questions: -If you were thirsty and hungry, which of these needs would you satisfy first? Why? -if you were thirsty and someone was trying to hurt you, what would you do? Why? -Do you know anyone who prefers satisfying the need for alcohol before any other basic need? Ask participants to share more about that specific individual if possible. Inform the participants that it is well researched and documented that food, clothing and housing are the most basic needs for everyone. Add that there are other basic needs that are described by Dr. Abraham Maslow. In his research regarding the needs of people, he proposed that all of our needs follow an order. Tell the participants that you will play a video that explains Maslow's theory of human motivation, known as the pyramid or hierarchy of human needs. Add that Maslow identified five types of needs, whose satisfaction is motivated in accordance with the order of priorities. Play the video "Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs." After watching the video, draw Maslow's pyramid of needs (make sure that there are 5 horizontal divisions with empty spaces between divisions). Ask the participants the following questions: -What is the first and most essential category need? Make sure to ask for examples. -What is the next category? Proceed with each category until you discuss all the categories. Once the pyramid has been completed, explain to the students that both behavior and decisions we all make are based largely on both the fulfilled and unfulfilled needs. However, people can move up and down through the pyramid, according to Maslow. Ask the participants if they have experienced or met individuals who do not follow the hierarchy proposed by Maslow. Give an example of how there are individuals who get to the point where they prefer to meet other needs before obtaining the basic needs according to Maslow. As a final activity, prepare an itemized list of our monthly expenses (ie. rent, food, car payment, entertainment, etc.) After you complete the list, discuss with the participants if the expenses reflect Maslow's theory. Do we spend our money on basic needs and necessities? |
