Introduce topic by describing, activity name, content standard, and objectives. Start the session by asking the following questions: -Has a friend or acquaintance asked you for money and you know he / she spent it in alcohol -Would you lend him / her money? -Why is it that many individuals who abuse alcohol and other drugs have financial problems? Inform the participants that we will discuss and identify the personal and financial burdens and effects that alcohol abuse has on individuals and their families. Write on the board "Effects of Alcohol Abuse" and below the title draw three columns with the labels: "social" "financial" and "family" Distribute the article and divide the larger group into three smaller groups. Direct one group to focus on the effects of alcohol abuse at the personal level. They need to identify at least three different effects that alcohol consumption has on the individual. The second group has to identify at least three different effects on the family. The third group has to identify at least three different financial effects that alcohol consumption has on individuals. Make sure to inform them that they need to identify a person in their group so they can share to the larger group in class. Give the groups enough time to discuss and identify their assigned topics. When you can observe that they had enough time to complete the task, organize them to discuss their findings. Have each group share their findings and discuss as necessary. The important aspect of this activity is to identify how individuals are affected directly in each of the 3 areas marked. Ask participants if they have been affected by any of the points identified and discussed. Ask them to share their experience. As a culminating activity, ask them if they agree with the statement that many times alcohol abuse is linked to poverty. Point out at the studies conducted within the article that you distributed and have them comment and discuss how would it be possible for an individual, who consumes and abuses alcohol and drugs, to condemn himself or herself and his/her family to a life of poverty. |
