Introduce topic by describing, activity name, content standard, and objectives. Ask the participants the following guiding questions: -Do you know what self-esteem is? What is it? -Do you believe that it exists? -Can it be altered or modified? How? -Do you think that low self-esteem leads to alcoholism? Explain that according to the Drug & Alcohol Rehab Asia Center, self-esteem plays an important role in becoming an alcoholic and they argue that having low self-esteem is a risk factor. Ask participants if they agree with that statement and to expand on why they agree or not agree. Ask for volunteers to help define what self-esteem is. Ask if it is possible to identify low self-esteem in others. How? Request that they help you describe the symptoms. Inform participants that everyone will read an article that will explain how addiction and low self-esteem interact and affect each other. Divide the class into three groups, and assign them a section of the article "Addiction and low self-esteem." All members of the team must have the same page of the article. *Request that they read and discuss the information with their assigned group. * Make sure to explain that one person from that group will share their conclusions with the group at large. After sharing to the class, ask the following questions: What is self-esteem? What situations affect a person's self-esteem? What are the effects of having low self-esteem? What are the signs of low self-esteem in a person? Why do people rely on alcohol or substances to keep up with their life? Tell them that there are simple and easy tips to help someone with low self-esteem. The video identifies the ways that individuals can regain their self-esteem. Ask volunteers to help you identify and write some of the tips highlighted in the video. As a final thought share with them that according to Joanna Saisan, M.S.W (master of social work), it is good for people with low self-esteem to help other people. According to Ms. Saisan,"...these actions will build the feeling of usefulness, and also it will reduce the time spent on criticizing or judging themselves". *Request that they provide ideas of what they could do to take this into practice. |
