Introduce topic by describing, activity name, content standard, and objectives. Ask participants the following questions: What is your favorite alcohol commercial? Do you feel like buying their product because of that particular commercial? Do you think that there are too many alcohol drinking commercials? Do you think that they are effective? Inform participants that today we will discuss advertisements and their effects on society. Add that many of us consume products that can be dangerous to our health, alcohol being one of the most consumed. One of the main contributors to the abuse of alcohol are advertisements by companies that sell such products. Ask participants what element of advertisements makes them buy alcohol or a specific brand? Inform the audience that we will watch a video that presents a variety of ads that use different elements to convince people to get those products. Once they watched the video, ask them, "In what ways are alcohol companies targeting minors to consume alcohol?" Do those advertisements really work? Give the participants a copy of the article "Alcohol Advertising and Youth", from subheading "Evidence from studies of the effects of reductions in alcohol advertising", presented by the Johns Hopkins University. Divide the group into three parts and assign each group two of the six sections of the reading. Give them some time to read their section and discuss it as a group. Ask them the following questions after the discussion: What elements of publicity are more appealing to young people? What type of conduct is more attractive to teens? Do the same commercials influence buying patterns in adults? How much money do big brands spend in marketing per year? What would be different if there was a reduction in the amount of alcohol ads during the day? Complete the activity by reviewing what was discussed. You can ask guiding questions for reference or the following questions: Do you believe in what the article describes? Are you influenced by commercials? Ask for examples |
