Introduce topic by describing, activity name, content standard, and objectives. Ask the participants the following questions: -Why do people do things when they are drunk that they normally would not do if they were sober? -Why do some men need a drink to talk to girls? -Why do you think some people need a drink to perform difficult actions? -Why do you think alcohol makes people feel like they can do anything? Inform participants that they will watch a movie trailer titled "Flight" and that trailer will assist us in setting up a discussion about why people are uninhibited when they drink alcohol. After watching the trailer, start the conversation by writing the quote on board,"You're the only one that could do it." What do they mean by the "only one?" Do they refer to his experience or the fact that they knew he was always drunk? Why do you think that? Ask if they know of someone in their family or circle of friends, who acts differently when he or she drinks alcohol. Ask them to share and give some samples of those actions. Inform participants that we will read a short article that explains how and why alcohol influences what decisions we make when we drink. The title of the article is, "Making Stupid Mistakes When Drunk: Here's how. After reading article, ask what was the most important fact they noticed. Ask what happens in our brain when we make mistakes and we are sober. Ask what happens in our brain when we make mistakes and we are drunk. (alarm signal in brain decreases or is hampered by alcohol consumption, we do not slow down to reconsider situations, we do not feel affected or care less for our mistakes or bad decisions) Ask people if they want to share an experience when they were drinking and did not consider their actions as they were drinking. Also, ask what other bad decisions do people make when they are drinking large amounts of alcohol. |
